If you have already checked which documents you need to enter Türkiye and discovered your nationality needs a visa, the next question is practical: how does the e-Visa actually work, and how do you get one without being overcharged by a middleman site?
What the e-Visa is
The e-Visa is an electronic travel authorization issued by the Turkish government before you fly. It replaced the old sticker and stamp visas for most short tourist and business visits. Instead of visiting a consulate, eligible travelers apply online, pay a fee, and receive a PDF linked to their passport number. Border officers can verify it in their system, but it is sensible to carry a printed copy and keep the PDF on your phone.
The only official application site is the Republic of Türkiye e-Visa portal. Many lookalike websites sit at the top of search results and will file the same application for a markup. They are not scams in the legal sense, but they add cost for nothing. Type the government address directly rather than clicking an ad.
Who needs one — and who doesn't
Eligibility is entirely nationality-based, and the rules change more often than people expect: countries move between visa-required, e-Visa-eligible, and visa-exempt status. Citizens of many countries can enter Türkiye for tourism with no visa at all for a set number of days. Others must obtain an e-Visa in advance, and a smaller group must apply through a consulate. How the application works
- Enter your details. Passport number, dates, and personal information must match your passport exactly. A typo in the passport number is the most common reason an e-Visa fails verification at the border.
- Choose your travel date. The e-Visa has a validity window that begins around the date you select, so apply once your plans are reasonably firm. You do not need to enter on the exact date chosen, only within the validity period shown on the visa.
- Pay the fee. Fees vary by nationality and are displayed on the official portal before payment. If a website quotes you a noticeably higher figure, you are on a reseller site.
- Download and save the PDF. The portal also lets you re-download an approved e-Visa and check application status later, which is useful if the confirmation email goes to spam.
Multiple entries, transits, and edge cases
Depending on nationality, an e-Visa may be single-entry or multiple-entry, and the permitted length of stay differs. If your itinerary includes leaving Türkiye and returning — say, a side trip to a neighboring country — confirm before applying that your visa type allows re-entry. Travelers who merely transit through a Turkish airport without passing immigration generally do not need a visa, but if you plan to leave the airport between flights, you do.
